The Lights Come Up as Queenstown Goes Quiet

The Casino at Kelvin Heights

Steps from the hotel lobby, the Casino at Kelvin Heights is a working casino - slot machines, blackjack, roulette and poker, played for real money, dealt face to face. Entry is complimentary for hotel guests and visitors alike, and the doors stay open well after the town has gone quiet.

Every hand and every spin happens here, on our own floor. All gaming is on-site only - Kelvin Heights offers no online gaming.

The Casino Floor

One room, low lighting, and the sound of the tables. The casino floor carries 120 slot machines - pokies, as they’re known here - from classic three-reel cabinets through to linked progressive jackpots. The slots take both coin and note, and winnings are paid out at the cage - alongside live table games dealt by our own croupiers.

Table Games

Minimum and maximum stakes are posted at every table. Our dealers will walk newcomers through the rules before a chip is placed, and they are glad to be asked.

  • Blackjack
  • Roulette
  • Poker - cash games and scheduled tournaments
  • Baccarat
  • Slot machines (pokies), including linked progressive jackpots

Chips are bought and redeemed at the cage on the edge of the floor, in NZ$.

After Dark, the Bar and the Floor

The Casino is open from 18:00 until 3:00am, seven days a week. Dress code is smart casual. Entry is complimentary for hotel guests and visitors alike, and no membership is required.

The casino bar runs the length of the room and serves until closing, with Central Otago wine, local beer and a short cocktail list. Live music plays on the small stage on Friday and Saturday evenings from 21:00. Food from the hotel kitchen is available at the bar until midnight.

Entry, Age and Identification

Entry to the Casino is restricted to persons aged 20 and over. Photo ID is checked at the door for every guest in accordance with the Gambling Act 2003 - a New Zealand driver licence, a passport, or a Kiwi Access Card. Guests who cannot produce ID will not be admitted to the gaming floor.

All gaming takes place on-site only - at our own tables, machines and cage here in Queenstown.

Host Responsibility

Gambling should stay enjoyable. Our staff are trained to recognise the signs of problem gambling and to step in early. Ask any host and we will arrange a break, a quiet word away from the floor, or a self-exclusion order - no explanation needed, and it takes effect the same evening.

  • Trained host responsibility staff on every shift
  • Breaks from play available on request
  • Self-exclusion arranged on the spot and honoured at the door
  • No ATMs or cash machines anywhere on the gaming floor
  • Clocks visible throughout the room

If gambling is causing problems for you or for someone you know, call the Gambling Helpline free and confidentially on 0800 654 655, available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, or visit choicenotchance.org.nz.
